European Webinar Series - Launching This Month!

In addition to our regular webinar program, we are launching a new series this month - the European Webinar Series. This series will feature events starting at 8:00 a.m. Central Time (Chicago, IL), instead of the usual 12:00 p.m. (to accommodate a European audience). In addition, the presenters will provide a European perspective designed with a European audience in mind, focusing on issues particularly relevant to you. The series is open to anyone, regardless of time zone, so feel free to get registered!

Emulsifiers 101

Waste Treatment of Metalworking Fluids

Overview: This webinar will briefly discuss waste water disposal requirements for users of metalworking fluids in the United States. We will then discuss several methods of waste water treatment such as: evaporation, chemical treatment, membrane separation, biological treatment, vapor compression distillation, and finally waste oil recovery.

The Steel Industry
Date/Time: Wednesday, June 26, 2013; 12-1 pm CDT (with additional time for Q&A from 1-1:30)
Instructor: Rick Schrama
Overview: This webinar on the steel industry will provide an overview of what the industry entails, the three main producing groups (integrated plants, mini-mills and finishing operations), the types of lubricants employed in the various operations and their typical properties and challenges/problems, as well as lubricant guidelines and lubrication systems. The last major topic to be reviewed is the actual steel making and processing operations. This includes the primary end of the integrated plant with its raw material handling, sinter plants, coke ovens, blast furnaces and direct reduction plants. The steel making side of the process with its electric arc and basic oxygen furnace technologies and then the continuous casting and hot rolling facilities will be reviewed. That is followed by the cold finishing and coating processes with its pickling, cold rolling, tempering and either galvanized or electrolytic tinning processes. The last part of any facility is the utilities and transportation groups, which includes the turbines, compressed gas compressors, motors, overhead cranes, rolling stock and trucks. The types of machinery and the bearings and drive components used in the processes will be outlined and related to their lubrication requirements.

Challenges in Using Environmentally Friendly Fluids

Overview: The purpose of this webinar is to provide information on the challenges in working with environmentally friendly lubricants. As part of this process, the confusion about what is an environmentally friendly lubricant and what is biodegradable is discussed. Two of the key detrimental properties for environmentally friendly lubricants are covered along with some of their main applications. Two government sponsored programs (the US Biopreferred Program and the European Union Eco-Label Program) are reviewed with details provided on what testing is needed to comply with both. Examples are given of guidelines for specific lubricant applications. The webinar will conclude with an assessment of the future of environmentally friendly lubricants.

Test Methods for Lubricants
Date/Time: Friday, April 19, 2013; 12-1 pm CST (with additional time for Q&A from 1-1:30)

Overview: This webinar will discuss the various ASTM tests which evaluate lubricant performance. These tests are utilized as predictors of actual field performance of lubricants. It is important to understand these test methods and their correlation to field performance when making lubricant decisions. All the major tests will be discussed with major emphasis on testing procedures, results interpretation, and relevance to field performance. Turbine, hydraulic, and gear oil tests will be examined utilizing sample data sheets from some of the major suppliers. Also, OEM requirements for these various product groups will be presented.After this webinar you will feel more confident in understanding the various performance tests so you can make meaningful comparisons between lubricant suppliers’ products.

AM Tech Session Update: MWF Hot Topic Panel Discussion

Metalworking Fluids "Hot Topic's" Panel Discussion REVISED Agenda
Based on the highly successful "Hot Topics" in metalworking fluids class, that was presented at the 2011 Annual Meeting, it was decided to give an update this year via a panel discussion in the Metalworking Fluids II Session on Monday afternoon (May 7), beginning at 1:30p.m.

Some recent government activity has caused us to modify the original agenda. In March 2012, OSHA revised the Hazard Communication Standard to align it with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals. It must be fully implemented by 2016, and imposes new hazard definitions for safety data sheets (SDSs) and labels and pictograms to be used on labels and in the workplace.

Based on the implications of this new rule for all chemical manufacturers, including metalworking fluids, the "Hot Topics" panel discussion agenda has been revised to devote time to this very important and timely topic. The first hour will be devoted to providing information on how this new GHS rule impacts fluid manufacturers, including ingredient classifications and requirements for exact percentage disclosure of hazardous ingredients. That will be followed by updates on biocides (including the current situation with formaldehyde) and chlorinated paraffins along with a review of the SCAQMD's Rule 1144 in California. Time will be allowed at the end for discussion. Plan to attend to get updated on the industry, ask questions of industry experts, and take part in the discussion.

Weekly Technical Feature - March has a MWF Focus

Starting this month, STLE will feature a topical list of resources, with each week focusing on a different aspect of that topic.

In the month of March, the focus is metalworking fluids, with resources and links on topics ranging from microbiology, additives, health, safety and misting, as well as MWF management, condition monitoring and recycling/waste treatment. Bear in mind that each week has a particular focus, but may include items not related to the topic - for instance, if there's an upcoming deadline or event.

January Webinars: VOCs from MWFs, Sales

As you start to plan out your holidays, keep upcoming education events in mind, whether it be for your own personal knowledge, for recertification (STLE's CLS, CMFS or OMA designations), or to help you with a specific issue you're facing right now at work, or will face when you get back from the holiday!

January marks the beginning of a new year and with it, we will feature 2 webinars per month, up from one per month this past year. The increased number will allow us to cover a larger number of topics throughout the year, including topics that impact you on a daily basis no matter what industry you're in. January 11, 2012: VOC Emissions from MWFs with Mike Morris & Uyen Uyen Vo, SCAQMD Short Abstract: The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) is the local air pollution regulatory agency serving the South Coast Air Basin (Basin) consisting of portions of Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange and San Bernardino counties in California. The air quality in the Basin has been designated as extreme non-attainment by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). For that reason, AQMD often finds itself at the forefront of the nation’s emission reduction efforts. As part of these efforts, AQMD has been investigating volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions from metalworking fluids. Notice: In early 2012, AQMD and ILMA will sponsor a joint symposium on emerging low-VOC technologies, including water-dilutable, bio-based and paraffinic products, to further explore emission reduction opportunities.

Metalworking Fluid Management Certificate Course - Reg Deadline, Oct 7!

Don't forget to register for STLE's upcoming Metalworking Fluid Management Certificate Course! This course is a great way to stay updated and to have proof of your expertise in the field (with an optional post-exam covering course concepts). Make sure to refer this information to your colleagues, as the pre-registration deadline is coming up very quickly - October 7, 2011! If you register by this date, you will get a free copy of the STLE White Paper, Development of Guildines for Using and Maintaining Metalworking Fluids. Be sure to get in while there's still time. The final deadline to register is October 25.

Also, if you'd like to sit for a certification exam (CMFS, CLS, or OMA I/II), you will need to register by October 14 (3 weeks before the date, to ensure there is enough participation to hold the exam sitting).
